B.DESIGN IN ANIMATION
“Animation can explain what the mind can conceive” – WALT DISNEY
Animation is the process by which we see still pictures move. Each picture is shot on film one at a time and is shown at the rate of 24 pictures per second making the pictures appear to move. Animators are artists who specialize in the creation of animation. There are different kinds of animation creation methods like Traditional Animation, Stop Motion Animation, Computer Animation, 2D Animation, 3D Animation, Clay Animation, Mechanical Animation, etc.
Animation is a booming industry all over the world with high paying jobs. The global animation and gaming market is expected to grow to about US$250 billion by 2016.

TO MAKE ANY ANIMATED MOVIE, VIDEO, GAME OR CARTOON THREE PROCESSES ARE INVOLVED:
1. Pre-production | 2. Production | 3. Post-production
Let us now understand all the three stages of making a animation movie starting from Pre-Production.
1. PRE PRODUCTION
This is the most important, most creative and fundamental part in animation without which neither production or post-production can be done. Pre-production for any animated film or game or comic is the process where you create a story, design the visual world that story will take place in, design the characters who will interact in that environment, and the pace or timing of the film. Preproduction involves character design, Background layout (BG), script writing & storyboarding. At Artemisia, though we teach all the aspects of animation, we focus a lot on pre-production as it is the most valuable skill an animator can have to rise high in animation industry.
Storyboarding : A Storyboard is a sequence of drawings that is used to help visualise the animation and to communicate ideas clearly. It details key events and scene changes in the animation, often accompanied by text notes describing what is occurring in the scene such as camera movements. Character design, character expression, character turn-around, etc. are important parts of storyboarding. The Storyboard helps to finalise the development and the storyline and is an essential stage of the animation process.
Character design : Character design involves developing the appearance and features of characters in an animation.
Scriptwriting : Scriptwriting is deciding the dialogues and actions the character would perform.
BG Layout : Layout is deciding and creating the scenery and background in which the story will take place.
Pre-production Modeling : Model sheets are drawn, which are precisely drawn groups of pictures. These sheets show all of the possible expressions & poses of the character. Model sheets are made to make sure that when animators work on a character through various shots, the design and the accuracy of the character is not distorted.
Animatic : Animatic is an animated storyboard. Story boards are brought together in an editing program and are cut together with the correct timing and pace of the film. They include basic sound effects and dialogue recordings. Animatics are used for pre-visualizing the film before production starts. Animatics are extremely important for making an animated movie, since they let you see what the movie might look like for the first time. This is when you first get a sense of the pacing, the rhythm and the progression of your film.
2.PRODUCTION
The process which follows after completion of Pre-production is called as Production. Processes for production part of making 2D & 3D animated movies or games differ. Production is much simpler in 2D but much more complex involving several processes in case of 3D. Production process for creating a 3D movie or game involves Layout, Modeling, Painting & Texturing, Rigging, Animation, Lighting & finally Rendering.
Layout : In this process, the Layout Artist produces a rough 3D version of what the storyboard artists had previously drawn on paper to be used by the animators as a guide. During this stage of Production, the Director approves camera moves, depth of field and the composition of the models, which make up the set and set dressing. It is then the responsibility of the Modeling department to deliver these approved set, prop and character models in the final layout stages.
Modeling : The blueprints of the modeling sheets are used to create the models. Two team work in the modeling department; one which makes physical model of the character & the other which converts the physical model onto computer as a 3D model using programs such as Autodesk Maya and 3D Studio Max. When modeling, the base object can be chosen from a cube, sphere, cylinder, cone and other options. Through the manipulation of vertices, faces, and edges, the original mesh is transformed into the final character.
Texturing : People in the texturing department either create a texture from beginning or edit an existing image. As a Texture Artist, you put the wrinkles on an old man’s face or the scales on a crocodile. Working hand-in-hand with the surfacing and shading departments, textures are painted to match the approved concept art and designs which were delivered by the art department. These textures are created in the form of maps which are then assigned to the model.
Lighting : Animation Lighting Artists keep the lighting of each and every scene smooth, realistic, and flawless so viewers will have no errors to spot. Lighters have a broad range of responsibilities, including placing lights, defining light properties, defining how light interacts with different types of materials, the qualities and complexities of the realistic textures involved, how the position and intensity of lights affect mood and believability, as well as color theory and harmony. The Director gives Lighter a scene and the Lighter uses computer programs to light the scene, determining how the light reflects on the people and the surfaces. The light must not be so bright that it washes out colors, but it should be bright enough that items are easy to see. Each shot must blend with the one before it, so the lighting must look the same within the scene.
Rigging : After the model is finished, it should now be ready to move. For e.g. a model of a horse is made. How does this horse move ? How does it run ? When a horse runs, it will have its bones within its skeleton, which when moves, will move the horse. The process of adding bones or skeleton to a digital character or defining the movement of a mechanical object using computer softwares is called rigging. For example, should a 3D model that looks like a leg be able to bend at the knee like a realistic leg ? Or can this leg be stretched into crazy shapes like a cartoon character’s leg ? Setting this up and telling the computer the range of motion for each part of the 3D model is what happens in the process of rigging.
Animation : In this stage, rigged models are animated using computer softwares. Computer Animators produce images which, when recorded in sequence and projected, create the illusion of movement. Animation can mean anything as simple as adding motion to a static ball to creating complex character performances that one sees in the latest 3D animated movies. 3D animation is a digital version of 2D animation. Instead of creating a new pose on each sheet of paper, 3D animators create poses on a series of still images that are referred to as frames. By creating a series of poses and playing it over a certain amount of frames one can create the illusion of movement. It is an animator’s job to make the 3D characters and objects come to life to make them look natural & believable. Computer Animators use what has been produced in Pre-production stage as a guide.
Rendering : The process after animation is rendering. For e.g. a photographer has to develop and print his photos before they can be displayed, similarly, when an animation is rendered, the computer rendering program takes the various components, variables, and actions of an animated scene and builds the final viewable result. Rendering gives the final appearance to the animation with visual effects such as shading, texture-mapping, shadows, reflections and motion blurs. Rendering sometimes takes a long time, even on very fast computers. This is because the software is essentially “photographing” each pixel of the image, and the calculation of the color of just one pixel can involve a great deal of calculation, tracing rays of light as they would bounce around the 3D scene. To render all the frames of an entire animated movie can involve hundreds of computers working continuously for months.
3.POST PRODUCTION
The process which follows after completion of Production is called as Post-Production. In post production the scenes developed in production are compiled together into a movie and sound effects are also embedded in the animated movie. Post-Production process involves Compositing, Sound Editing and Video Editing.
Compositing : Combining rendered computer animation, special effects, live action and static background into a final product is called as compositing. It involves assembling together different visual elements of a scene are so as create a single scene.
Sound Editing : At this stage of post-production, sound recordings are finally selected, manipulated and mixed to give all the sound effects required for the final completed film. It is made sure that the speech or music coming from the character is synchronisation with its lips.
VFX : Mixing live action footages of a normal movie with computer generated images to create special effects is called VFX. Nearly every movie made nowadays uses VFX. Inspite of the fact that the VFX work is done during the post-production process, most of it is designed and composed in the Pre-production and production stage of film.
